Gold Spot was amongst the reputed three brands of carbonated soft drinks. The Gold spot was introduced in India by Parle Bisleri in the year 1977 after the exit of Pepsi Co and Coca-Cola from the Indian market.
Gold spot drink came into existence along with Limca and Thumps Up. It was colored orange, the same flavor you would taste in Desi Pop Soda drinks. Parle sold Gold Spot along with Citra, Limca, Maaza and Thumps Up to Coca Cola in the year 1993, reportedly for $40 million.
Despite the huge popularity of Gold Spot, it was removed by Coke from the market to make space for Coca Cola and Fanta brand. The Gold spot was launched in the year 1952 and it turned out to be a huge hit among the youngsters especially because of its delicious taste though the drink was slightly more chilled.
Many sellers would carry bottles of Gold Spot in big utensils containing ice to keep the bottles chilled. It was their routine to sell bottles at locations with huge crowd. Children loved the orange tangy taste and excellent marketing by Parle made this drink one of the most famous drinks.
For the future, Parle diversified its business operations by setting up more bottling units and franchise network for Gold Spot. By the end of 1970, Parle already had a Pan India presence through its wide bottling plant network for Gold Spot and the time was pretty much ideal to launch another beverage to leverage the investment.
With a tasty orange drink already in its portfolio, the next choice was a lemon drink and this is how Limca came into the market to let people relish the unique taste.
Since Gold Spot was more liked by children, Parle made up its mind to change its marketing strategy by changing the image of Gold Spot. Parle incurred a lot of funds to reach out to the masses from every class.
Soon, due to the political conflicts in the country, this had a huge negative impact on Parle and that’s how the most loved brand of 80’s was killed.
But, fear now when you can still enjoy the same flavors in our Desi pop soda orange-flavored drinks.
